I am having a great time learning to “paint” digitally. Above is my first attempt at digital painting, called “All is OK.”
Digital painting is completely different than using a traditional paintbrush and paint, but it allows for some great new benefits such as:
- trying something and then quickly deleting it if I don’t like it
- not feeling “bad” about wasting expensive paint supplies if I just want to test out an idea
- zero dry time for experimenting with layers
- creating quick sketches and saving them for later
- quickly use new “brushes” without having to go out and buy a brush
- quickly use new colors without having to buy a ton of paint tubes
- once the application is installed and you understand the controls, there is no “set up” nor “clean up” time.
- being eco-friendly (no waste!)
What I use for digital painting:
I’m using a few different apps and a few different stylus pens:
- iPad
- Procreate (app is $5.99)
- Adobe Ideas is free
- am Pen (with brush-like nib)
- am Pen (with ultra sensitive nib)
I’m so new to it so I am learning as I go, but am having a blast so far.
If you have an iPad and are looking for a quick way to get your hands “dirty” without having to deal with set up and clean up time, I highly recommend trying some drawing and painting programs on the iPad.
